And thank you for the comment. That sounds very strange and unfortunate, especially with the collection you have. Very intriguing whiskies you got there! My only true experience with whisky evaporating from the bottle is with miniature Tullamore Dew bottle. It had a simple screw cork which most likely couldn’t seal enough and also, conditions were too hot because foolish me stored it in kitchen cabinet up high. What kind of cork did your vintage bottle have?

For crumbling corks I don’t know any other method than breaking it in and using some kind of strainer to pour it into another bottle.

I had a bottle of OFC from the 70’s from a 30 bottle sealed vintage collection. I even wrapped a few bottles with saran wrap that I knew I wouldn’t be touching for a long time… 80’s JD, 72 JWB, 1957 stamped Crown, early 70’s Beefeater and Tangeuray. I have them in the same location with newer bottles. Dark. Room temperature. Humidity kept low for entire space. I was just looking at something and noticed the OFC had evaporated a decent amount in the last 6 months. I’m not sure about the other bottles. If they had lost some liquid, it’s at a much slower rate. I’m wondering if the dehumidifier has hand in it…. Wasn’t even touched. Basically a full neck prior to this. The only external change is the lower humidity. I’m guessing internal?
Also, I have some Limited Release 20 year old Scotch bottles I bought after falling in love with it and knowing it won’t ever be seen again. The problem is that the corks all crumble. It’s impossible to take the cork out for all of the bottles. The left over is stuck to the glass and has to be scraped off. What would you suggest? The bottle was released a few years ago. I’m wondering what caused this and what effect it will/did have on the whisky itself, even though the level is not decreasing. Improper storage from the liquor store? The 18 year old they have with the same cork and released about the same time does not have this issue.

In reply to Deb. Hi Deb, concrete floor should be fine. If the whiskey bottle has a good tight cap and conditions are otherwise good, temperature not hot for example, it's okay.

I make my own tinctures, etc. using whiskey & vodka. I haven’t made any tinctures for over 5 yrs and I stored the alcohol in the bottom of a cabinet, setting the bottles on the concrete floor of the cabinet. Is it safe to use these products after sitting on the floor (concrete) for so long? Sure don’t want to risk getting anyone ill Thank you

In reply to AL Moran. If it's sealed and full of whiskey, I'd say it's good as new. At least if it's an official release by the distillery or well known independent bottler. So that we can know for sure that it's been properly bottled with actual whiskey in it.

What if it was purchased in a sealed decanter decorative bottles . Wild West or even wild turkey bottles etc is that the same as a new bottle
