Laphroaig 10 year old review

Laphroaig 10 year old single malt is a smoky medicinal whisky, a legendary Islay malt, which I don’t have to explain so much. Very cost efficient dram. Matured in 1st fill Bourbon casks by Maker’s Mark. Maker’s Mark barrels are air dried more than others, which takes out some of the heavy oak flavor.

Laphroaig Distillery Manager John Campbell claimed this to be the only malt in their range, that he enjoys with water. Though “only” 40% alcohol by volume, water does bring nice earthly notes.

HALLOWEEN II – strong character in healing environment

Laphroaig 10YO is pretty much like Mike Myers in Halloween II, where he went to the hospital: healing environment filled with a strong character.

Colour: Pale straw

Nose: Very simple but in my opinion, one of the best aromas out there. Great, powerful smoke with iodine. Sweet notes in the background.

Taste: Oak and peat hit you with salt, spices and sweetness. Malty and medicinal with small drops of vanilla. Water adds earthly and green tones.

Finish: Not a rough one but a strong one. Dry and smoky lasting finish with tar and iodine.

Balance: Very powerful dram. If this doesn’t heal you, then nothing will. Very characteristic Islay single malt whisky.

Laphroig 10YO is nice to enjoy with a lid on top of your nosing glass, just to be extra sure not to lose any of that heavy smoke.
