Isle of Jura 12 years

Jura 12 year old whisky label

12 year old single malt by Isle of Jura distillery – managed to explore whiskies surprisingly long before tasting this expression. Well, I have to admit I haven’t been a fan of Jura whiskies. So their range doesn’t come up as go-to selection for me, received this as a gift.

This expression has been matured in American white oak bourbon barrels, before being moved over to Oloroso sherry casks for a finishing period.

In 2018 Jura distillery ‘s core range got a relaunch, which included this 12 year old single malt. The label and packaging was originally in red but was rebranded. Or maybe it’s just this 0,35 litre bottle that has a black label.

Above average

For some odd reason, Jura hasn’t been my go-to whisky range. Although when revisiting my previous Jura whisky reviews, there were some fairly good scorings.

I guess Jura has been a decent distillery showing in my tastings but nothing special, above 90 points.

Overall, this 12YO seems to be above average and a good contender for Jura 16YO.

Matured in:
Ex-Bourbon barrels, finished in Ex-Oloroso Sherry casks
Colour: Deep gold
Nose: Citrus notes with sweet sherry mixed on the aromas. Grapefruit on the front and red fruits on the back. Bit nutty.
Taste: Fruits and nutmeg, especially tropical fruits. Hints of toffee.
Finish: Spices hit very late in the aftertaste and peppermint notes rise at the very end.
Balance: Quite enjoyable whisky, I wish the palate could live up to its aftertaste. Nice aromas, pleasant yet discreed taste, and good finish.
