Isle of Jura Red Wine Cask Finish

Jura Red Wine Cask Finish Edition

Jura Red Wine Cask Edition comes from the Isle of Jura distillery and like the name states, it’s been finished in wine casks. Before its wine cask finish, aged in American white oak bourbon barrels.

This expression really intrigued me since I’ve never been able to fully enjoy Jura whiskies. Whether it’s the general spiciness or some other Jura distillery factor, for some odd reason their single malts have never been my favorites.

Maybe addition of wine cask sweetness might do the trick?

Jura Red Wine Cask Finish Edition Single Malt Whisky

Typical Jura with sweet twist

Unfortunately for my palate, this has Jura written all over it. If you try to undress the red wine cask influence, you can really taste the Jura distillate the longer you let it linger in your whisky glass.

Although, the cask influence seems to do enough for my taste. Even though I would rate this only as an okay whisky, it’s better than I expected when considering my Jura tasting track record.

Matured in:
Ex-Bourbon casks, finished in Ex-Red Wine casks
Colour: Deep gold
Nose: Malt and cereal with red berries are part of the main event. Bit creamy and fruity sweet. Nice start.
Taste: Sweet red wine influence is evident, offering notes of raspberries and other red berry flavors. But then it starts to get a little too Jura for my taste, giving away some kind of spicy vanilla and cinnamon notes.
Finish: Spices with red berries and fruits nicely complimenting each other in balance. But a bit too simple and rapid aftertaste.
Balance: Promising expression, especially the aromas were nice. But there’s still that Jura factor coming in to play, that doesn’t fit my palate. Good news for Jura fans, though!
