The Macallan 12YO Double Cask review

The Macallan 12YO Double Cask review
WhiskyRant’s conclusions
Tasting notes

Quite new age stated expression from Macallan, released in 2016. This single malt whisky was described as:

“A new interpretation on the signature 12 Years Old Macallan”

Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask whisky has been matured in a combination of American and European Ex-Sherry oak casks. Yes, this means that the American oak used in this expression has been seasoned with sherry. Unlike The Macallan 12 Year Old Fine Oak release, which has had Ex-Bourbon American oak casks used in aging.

Conclusions

Love Story with Macallan

I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of Macallan. Even though I’ve had my share of the old Macallans (Sherry Oaks and 12YO Elegancia), many of them have build quite a reputation in the past. It would be fun to revisit those Macallans and some other old ones as well, to see if my taste has changed drastically. Probably I wasn’t in Macallan mood when I first started experiencing different kind of sherry matured whiskies. I’m a peathead and my interest with whiskies grew while trying smoky expression.

This Macallan feels surprisingly good. I even accepted Macallan Amber, their non age stated (NAS) whisky. This is kinda like experiencing Love Story with this brand. Falling in love with this whisky regardless of two different backgrounds. Just waiting for the tragedy to come, like in the movie. Probably it’s a bad NAS Macallan waiting around the corner.

Tasting notes

Matured in:
American and European Ex-Sherry casks
Colour: Deep golden amber
ABV: 40%
No added colour
Nose: Oak tannins are strong. Spicy and dry sherry notes. Raisins and sulphury notes. Drops of water bring out sherry sweetness and burnt sugar.
Taste: Quite powerful and dry sherry with burnt sugar and nutty notes. Nutmeg and red fruits. Juicy and sugary yet slightly bitter nectarines rise up when you let it rest in the glass. Drops of water turns the palate sweeter too.
Finish: Plums and oaky sherry. Smooth, fruity and juicy. Fruity caramel stays with you quite long. Addition of water makes the aftertaste more full, brings out some nice sherry sweetness.
Balance: This dram gets better with oxidation. I found myself liking this Macallan more each time it had gotten more air. Even under half full bottle, and this nectar tastes better than before. I suggest adding couple of drops of water, opens up this dram very well.
