GlenAllachie 10YO Batch 3 Cask Strength Single Malt

This is Batch 3 of 10 year old cask strength single malt by The GlenAllachie distillery. A distillery known to produce malt whisky for blends under Pernod Ricard and Chivas Brothers ownership. Chivas sold the distillery in 2017 to The GlenAllachie Distillers Company (Billy Walker, Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson).

Under its new ownership GlenAllachie has started a mission to offer quality whisky for enthusiasts under independently owned distillery. Quality in this case means whiskies bottled at 46% alcohol by volume level or above, with natural color and without chill filtering.

It’s easy to believe in their mission when Walker is in the team. He helped GlenDronach and BenRiach distilleries reach good reputations. Especially GlenDronach has received lots of appreciation by whisky aficionados. In fact, I like both of those distilleries.

Batch 3 was released in 2019 as 3500 bottle edition. Bottled at cask strength (58,2%) and non-chill filtered. It’s been aged in first fill Oloroso and PX sherry casks.

Tasting notes

Matured in:
Ex-Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks
ABV: 58.2%
Non-chill filtered, no added colour
Colour: Mahogany
Nose: Hints of minty dark chocolate. And peach peel. Sherry notes strike in. And oak. Tropical fruits and red berries.
Taste: Sweet and dark fruits, quite syrupy. Figs and blood oranges. Drops of water and oxidation brings softness and richness in the form of vanilla, licorice and cinnamon.
Finish: Bit too dry and sulphuric for my taste. Spices start the show but quickly fade away, giving room for cocoa, sultanas and dried fruits. Oxidation and addition of water brings versatility, adding licorice and dark fruit notes.
Balance: Let this one breathe and change its tone. It becomes quite rich and for my palate, much more pleasant while parting ways with the dryness. Like with the 15 year old GlenAllachie, the aftertaste felt like the weakest part.
