Lagavulin 1996 Distillers Edition review

Lagavulin logo

Lagavulin 1996 Distillers Edition, also stated as the double matured, is evidently their 16 year old with a Pedro Ximénez dessert sherry cask finish. A fact, that really explained a lot to me about this dram afterwards. Actually I didn’t know it before I started the tasting, even though Lagavulin 16 years is my all-time favorite dram and I like to read about the stuff I’m tasting.

Full whisky palate of PORNO

1996 Distillers Edition turned out to be the sweeter and more subtle version of Lagavulin’s signature smoky flavors. My movie reference for Lagavulin 16YO was Trainspotting. So naturally, when I heard that a movie production of Porno was in the making, this has to be it. Porno is the sequel for Trainspotting, both based on the novels by Irvine Welsh.

I don’t know the Porno movie outcome yet, but because Danny Boyle and John Hodge are involved, I’m not gonna hesitate to compare this nice Lagavulin 1996 Distillers Edition to it. If Porno is even nearly as good as its predecessor Trainspotting, it is like experiencing this DE dram. Gets close to the level of Lagavulin’s benchmark whisky, the 16 year old.

Matured in:
Ex-Bourbon casks, finished in Ex-Sherry Pedro Ximénez casks
Colour: Dark amber
Nose: Not the best part but very intriguing. Smoke disappears too quickly but fortunately it gives space for sweet peat and wood.
Taste: Roasted malt and strong iodine, peat and syrupy flavors. Smoke comes back just before the great finish.
Finish: The best part: lasts long with oaky, smoky and peaty notes and hints of spices. I could chew it forever!
Balance: Full and rich, almost as rich as Lagavulin 16 years. The richness being mostly in the end. A great way to start exploring smoky whiskys.
