Quick review of Bowmore 10 year old Dark & Intense, which was originally released for travel retail market. A mixture of classic Islay coastal notes and sweet sherry cask influence.
This 10YO Bowmore single malt has been matured in a combination of Spanish oak Sherry casks and hogsheads. Bottled in 1 liter size because of the travel retail market.
What’s amazing is the fact that it is age stated. Usually travel retail versions are below 10 years old.
Tax Free goodness
This Bowmore was surprisingly okay, considering it to be a low alcohol per volume product trying to target general public at airports and other tax free shops.
But then again, it’s just okay. Just what to expect from travel retail or other special editions with low ABV level (which are usually non-age statement whiskies).
Easy to approach, mixture of Bowmore character and sweet sherried notes.
Marriage of Ex-Sherry casks and hogsheads
Colour: Dark reddish amber
Nose: Burnt sugar mixed with hints of salty sea air. Nice combo of crispy berries and smooth fruity notes, along with light peat smoke. Berry notes come up with drops of water.
Taste: Orange peel, sherry and oak. Raisins and plums. Thick red fruits and some crispy citrus notes. Drops of water makes things very smooth, bringing sweet sherry notes upfront.
Finish: Sherried and malty, little bit peaty. Quite short and dry, hints of salty and medicinal notes. Addition of water makes the aftertaste more crispy and bit more smooth yet dry.
Balance: Has potential but doesn’t quite deliver. Easy to drink and above average for sure. Nice sherried and peated malt from Bowmore.
Distillery: Bowmore Region: Islay
Bowmore also has exclusive Aston Martin edition of its 10YO Dark & Intense expression
Even I drink peated whisky 80% of the time, I have to admitt this one is really good. It just do the job perfectly and there is no way you do not like it. A very complex and mature whisky, with incredible sweetness as well. It will suit everyone on Xmas, no doubt.
