Glenfarclas 21 year old review

Glenfarclas 21 year old

It’s a shame I didn’t have a chance to spend enough time over this dram. This 21 year old single malt by Glenfarclas distillery was part of our local whisky society’s tasting, and these are my quick notes of this special Speysider.

I’ve always had a huge amount of respect for Glenfarclas. They’ve managed to keep traditional age stated whiskies in their core range, with reasonable pricing in today’s mad whisky pricing scenery.

Glenfarclas 12 year old and the king of sherry bombs, Glenfarclas 105 are legendary household names in whisky communities. Even though they’ve not on my favorite lists (because I’m not a sherry bomb fan), I respect those expressions and the principals Glenfarclas has.

Tasting notes

Even though my tasting took place quite rapidly, I immediately sensed that this is quality single malt.

Matured in:
Ex-Sherry casks
No added colour
ABV: 43%
Colour: Gold amber
Nose: Nice mix of tobacco notes and sherry. Juicy apples and other fruits, hints of leather, with peppermint twist at the end.
Taste: Peaches and raisins with barley on the back. Quite thick and even juicier than the nose. Slightly roasted and caramelized. Has nice velvet coating.
Finish: Nicely long, oily and creamy. Oak and sherry influence is very much present. Barley again adding nice texture while you chew away.
Balance: Quality dram in balance. Mixture of fruits, great oak influence and fullness all together in festivity.
