Glenfiddich Select Cask Single Malt

Glenfiddich Select Cask

From the Travel Retail Cask Collection range by Glenfiddich distillery, this is the Select Cask expression. A non age stated (NAS) single malt whisky from the Speyside region.

Glenfiddich Select Cask is a marriage of whiskies matured in European oak (sherry?), bourbon and red wine casks. Casks have been selected by malt master Brian Kinsman, then married in Glenfiddich’s Solera system.

So this expression reminds me a bit about their 15 year old single malt which is a marriage of two different casks (sherry and new oak) in Solera vat. Select Cask is only younger and made using slightly different casks.

“Most awarded single malt Scotch”

Says Glenfiddich. But I’m still not a fan. I started my Glenfiddich experimenting with their age stated whiskies such as the 12 and 15 year old. And didn’t like them.

So it was evident I would not fall in love with their NAS expressions. Overall a decent dram but I wouldn’t suggest filling your whisky tasting glass with this single malt, if you have other options.

Matured in:
Marriage of Ex-Bourbon, Ex-Wine and European casks
ABV: 40%
Colour: Chardonnay
Nose: Sour citrus notes, lemon being the main note. Hints of malt and oak. Smooth and pleasant vanilla evolves when you let it rest in the glass.
Taste: Malt dominates, very grainy and slightly sour. Biscuits and hay, bananas on the side. Mix of unmature oak and malt seems to be the theme.
Finish: Quite fast. Malt is again present. Bitter with berries and earthy notes such as grass and hay.
Balance: Probably what I expected. Young unmatured and uncomplicated whisky. Lacks in character but if you like the palate, then it’s easy to drink because of its simplicity.
