Ragtime Rye Double Oak Cask Strength Whiskey

This cask strength rye whiskey comes from New York Distilling Company and its mash bill contains 72% New York State-grown rye grain. I managed to get a sample from my buddy.

I couldn’t find much information about this expression, other than what says in the label. That it’s double oak matured: aged in new American oak (I presume) and finished in rye whiskey casks. And it comes in the original cask strength, bottled at 56% alcohol by volume level. Beware that barrel proof rye whiskey will most likely have a strong kick. So let it rest and open up in your whiskey glass and add some water if it’s too powerful for your palate.

Ragtime Rye whiskies pay tribute to 1890-1920 era of ragtime era. They are replicating the spirit of stalwarts of saloons and brothels alike. Too bad there’s not that much information on how this rye whiskey has been made.

Tasting Notes

Mash bill:
72% rye, 16% corn, 12% malted barley
New American oak, finished in rye whiskey casks
ABV: 56%
Colour: Golden amber
Nose: Starts with metallic aromas and light rye. Turns into spruce wood, with pleasant cherry and hints of pointy varnish. Very unusual but pleasant nose! Oxidation and drops of water bring marshmallows and cotton candy.
Taste: Mix of candy or Hubba Bubba bubblegum and slightly bitter rye. Even hints of sweet corn are there. Juicy  apples, tropical fruits and warming spices.
Finish: Explosion of peppers and pointy rye. Needs some time to take in. Notes of orange peel and berry jam start to evolve when you really dig in.
Balance: You should definitely take your time with this strong high rye whiskey. Let it open up in your whiskey glass, concentrate on the peculiar nose first and gradually make your way to the palate. Explosive rye whiskey, not for everyone but if you’re into rye whiskies, explore this one!
