Kyrö Single Malt Rye Whisky – Batch 5

Kyrö Single Malt Rye whisky pre-release 5 has been distilled from 100% Finnish malted rye and matured over 3 years in bourbon and new oak casks by Kyrö Distillery. This is a very small batch edition. Only 2000 pieces of 10 cl bottles and 200 pieces 50 cl bottles.

You might have heard of Kyrö because of their award winning Napue gin, but believe, you have to get to know their malted rye whiskies too! I really like what these guys are doing with their gin and rye whisky expressions. As a fellow Finn I’m proud to say that they are using our national grain for good.

Kyrö Single Malt Rye Batch 5 Review

Slightly better than the 1st batch

Compared to Kyrö’s batch 1, this one’s more mature. Though batch 1 was fresher. So both expressions have their pros and cons. And I like them both, although batch 1 needed some time to become fond to.

Nice job, although I think there’s room for improvement. Expectations are just so high with these folks every time.

Tasting Notes

Matured in:

New oak and Ex-Bourbon casks

ABV: 47.2%

Colour: Dark amber

Nose: Starts with slight bitterness. Raisins and oak develop into pointy rye. Drops of water tones things done, giving room for the oak and making the rye darker and peppery.

Taste: Peppery honey explosions, great start! Refreshing sweet peach. Finnish rye bread notes on the side. And hints of floral tones. Drops of water turn the palate darker too, like chewing dark rye bread.

Finish: Sour rye notes are very strong. Long but quite one-sided. Finnish rye bread all the way, with notes of apricot coming very late in the aftertaste.

Balance: More mature than the first batch by Kyrö. But not quite as rich as Suomi100 expression. The rye notes are very evident and they are very Finnish!
