Mackmyra distillery is located in Gävle, Sweden. My first introduction to this Swedish distillery came while sampling their first ever release. I did not like it.

But after the rough start I began to like what they’re doing, especially the authenticity of Svensk Rök. Mackmyra’s approach seems to be, that they bring something new to the table.

According to the distillery Mackmyra Special range is a:

“Drink for special occasions and special people. For you who have found the Swedish malt whisky and wants to experience its nuances. For you who live life less ordinary.”

Mackmyra Special:07 is a blend of their recipes called Smoke and Elegant. This whisky has been matured in various different cask types from 30 to 200 liters. Aged in Swedish oak casks and finished on casks saturated with cloudberry wine.

Whisky with The Best Intentions

Edition 07 of Mackmyra’s Special range continues to offer a different kind of smoky experience, especially for a peathead like me. This slightly peaty single malt is elegant and special, like the name suggests.

Special 07 is also called Framtidstro (optimism in English). With whiskies like these there is hope for the future!

I’ve referenced Ingmar Bergman’s movies before with Mackmyra whiskies. If I must find one for this occasion, I’ll just state that this whisky has The Best Intentions (movie written by Bergman).

Matured in:
Swedish Oak and casks saturated with cloudberry wine
ABV: 45.8%
Colour: Light gold
Non-chill filtered, no added colour
Nose: Hints of butterscotch and lots of vanilla. Sweet red berries mixed with grappa. Addition of water brings honey and peaches, makes the aromas even more better.
Taste: Gooseberry and oak. Mix of sweet tropical fruits and slightly bitter berries. Hints of nuts. Drops of water add bitterness and even some smoke. Along with spices and green fruits.
Finish: Fresh vibrant oak is strong in this one. Pretty quick finish. Quite young and stingy first but turns pleasant though. Water brings up fresh minty and spicy notes.
Balance: Fresh yet young, one sided and straight forward but then again, nicely smooth and round. This is weird because on the palate it’s not my typical go-to whisky but still I kinda like it.
