Rossville Union 6 year old Bottled in Bond Rye

Two Rossville Union 6 year old rye whiskey bottles

When I first saw this new American rye whiskey standing on a shelf of Finnish liquor store, with words “Bottled in Bond” typed on the label, I got excited. As an ultimate rye whiskey fan I knew that BiB most likely stands as initials for quality.

Though it’s just an old act how a product should be made, there’s at least one key element that speaks to me the right way. It has to be 100 proof, meaning 50 % alcohol by volume. That’s usually a good thing. I must add, in my opinion Rittenhouse BiB 100 proof is one of the best rye whiskies out there.

As this Rossville was moderately priced by today’s standards. And it was as old as 6 years, which is very old for rye whiskey, I just had to get on. Fortunately I got another one from my spouse. So behold, suddenly I had two presumably bang for buck rye whiskies waiting in my cellar.

Whiskey City delivers!

My expectations were high as mentioned. Glad to say, they were met. Bottled in Bond statement really makes its mark on this rye in a positive way.

Strength and rich flavors combined in old, sophisticated rye whiskey. Made in whiskey city Lawrenceburg, like the distillers state. I can happily recommend this to everyone.

Tasting Notes

Mash bill:
Undisclosered
Maturation:
New charred American oak
ABV: 50%
Colour: Amber
Nose: Syrupy, sugar marinated cherry punch. Fruits and candy dominate but there’s some spicy and oaky notes on the back as well.
Taste: Sugared Maraschino cherries that turn into sweet tangerines and honey. Addition of water brings more darkness, mocha and chocolate with warming spices.
Finish: Mix of warming spices and sugars. Balancing between cinnamon notes and sugary red fruits. Hints of citrus and oak too.
Balance: Overall, good and powerful rye whisky. Even though powerful, quite easy to drink if you add little bit of water.
