Mufloni Saison Gaelach – beer aged in Jameson casks

Mufloni Saison Gaelach is a limited edition beer made for Uisge festival in Finland. Originally the plan was to launch it for Beer Expo in Finland, but it did not quite make it. The original Saison used for this whisky cask matured beer had an ABV of 7%. After maturation in the Jameson whisky casks, the alcohol per volume level raised to 10%.

Jameson leaves you a bit cold

In theory, this beer might work, but in practice, it didn’t really rock my boat. Muflonis are products from Pori, Finland. Brewed in Panimoravintola Beer Hunter’s, who were responsible for Old Buck whisky. That’s why my expectations were high.

Probably the usage of Jameson didn’t make this beer as good as a saison matured in whisky casks could be – probably some better whisky would have made the difference.

Yeast: Saison

Hops: Amarillo, Chinook, Columbus, Nugget

Malts: Pilsner, Carapale, Munich, Melanoid, Crystal, Chocolate

Colour: Dark brown with red hue

Nose: Plums dominate. Malt in a sweet yet roasted way. Crispy red berries and yeast. Sherry and oak are present as well.

Taste: Very sweet and slightly bitter aftertaste. Bit of sweet grainy whiskey feel but mostly it’s sweet and bitter dark fruits and red berries.
