Pyynikin Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

Pyynikin Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

This Finnish beer comes from Pyynikin Brewing Company, which is a craft beer producer in Tampere, Finland.

Most of the whiskey matured beer that I’ve tasted, have been either bad or average. They are usually way too sweet for my taste. Like Ola Dubh, Pyynikin Bourbon Aged Imperial Stout manages to offer a whiskey matured beer in balance. Not über sweet or too pointy. Sweeter than Ola Dubh for sure, but in great balance, and smooth as silk.

Beer type: Imperial Stout
ABV: 13%
IBU: 44
Colour: Black
Nose: Vanilla and bourbony oak. Chocolate and moccha notes. Pleasant and smooth aromas.
Taste: This beer is in balance. Dark palate with lots of chocolate and hints of coffee notes. Some bourbon whiskey sweetness and spirit is presented but everything is in balance and not pushing through. Some cherry notes. Gets bit dry and fruity in the aftertaste but everything remains pleasant. Bit oily. Easy to drink, you would never guess the 13% ABV – this one is smooth! And tasty.

Scoring

Even though not a full ten point beer, I had to review it because of the major whisky influence.

9 Nicely in balance, good job with American white oak Ex-Bourbon maturing

Brewery: Pyynikin Brewing Company
