Smoky Scot Islay Single Malt

Smoky Scot Islay Single Malt

Smoky Scot is a 5 year old single malt by Islay region’s Caol Ila distillery, bottled by Aceo Spirits. Since we’re talking about a young indie bottling, it makes you uncertain about the quality. But coming from reputable Islay distillery set my hopes higher than with other similar type of spirits.

You can clearly see that there’s no color added, looks like young bourbon cask aged whisky while glancing away in my whisky tasting glass.

Smoky Scot Islay Single Malt Whisky Review

Heavily peated but not that rich

Aceo claims that this one’s “heavily peated and rich in flavour”. It definitely is heavily peated, but it’s not rich. Quite straight forward.

But as a peathead, I still like it. It has that typical Caol Ila smokiness combined with taming fruity notes. Good mix of different notes, even though it’s not as rich as label suggests.

Matured in:
Ex-Bourbon casks
Non-chill filtered, no added colour
ABV: 46%
Colour: Chardonnay
Nose: Maritime smoke. Salty sea air combined with quick bonfire.
Taste: Bitter and smoky first, turns bit fruity and sweet over time. Lemons, medicinal peat and pepper.
Finish: Slightly oily. Bit of sweetness rises from the back.
Balance: Young and rough but shows a little bit of tender side as well. Not as rich but comparable to Caol Ila 12YO.
